The RKS Approach

The RKS team leverages a holistic perspective on innovation challenges and a flexible, guiding process, alongside powerful tools, to consistently develop people-focused solutions with global impact.

Our approach is characterized by a holistic perspective on each innovation or design challenge, achieved by retaining focus on four “lenses:” People, Offerings, Brand, and Business. This holistic perspective enables us to inform the design process with relevant insights.

The Psycho-Aesthetics® driven process is guided by three distinct phases – Discovery, Creation and Execution – which provide the flexibility and scalability to properly tackle any design or innovation challenge. Discovery encompasses analytic assessment of stakeholder requirements, end-user needs and industry dynamics, to translate these insights into strategies for the creation and evaluation of compelling concepts. Execution focuses on bringing ideas to life, while providing the vision for engaging audiences and compelling their advocacy.

The Psycho-Aesthetics® mantra and mapping are utilized throughout each stage to communicate the eco-system opportunities, and guide the development of strategic and attractive solutions that resonate with target audiences throughout distribution channels, while facilitating collaboration amongst the innovation teams.

The Hero’s Journey objective helps clients better introduce offerings to enthusiastic consumers whose needs and aspirations are fulfilled, and who in turn, help propel their discovered solutions within their communities. Creating people-focused solutions with impact is aided by understanding how offerings attract and engage, are adopted, and advocated in the real world. Developing appropriate tactics only results from a combination of insights derived from the strategic lenses and rigorous process, which are guided by our fundamental philosophy at all times:

A Holistic Perspective

RKS addresses innovation and design challenges through a holistic perspective, always considering four strategic lenses: Offerings, Brand, and Business - all centered around, People.

Through these lenses we ensure products and services make business sense, fit into people’s lives, and have a home in the marketplace. Where once the focus was on tangible links to touch points that engage the senses, providing solutions for today’s and tomorrow’s consumers requires a deep understanding of intangible emotional connections to the brand. It also requires generating value within the business architecture.

People:
The Core Focus

Effective product and service strategy requires that teams step back and put people at the center. Only then can you truly evaluate the offering, brand, and competitive dynamics in proper context. Having a robust but flexible approach to understanding peoples’ needs and aspirations is the essential component of each unique innovation challenge, around which we explore existing market segmentation and opportunities to cater to new customers.

Brand:
The Intangible Element

Market leadership requires establishing long-term, game-changing offerings that create emotional connections with users, which necessitates careful translation, formulation or development of brand attributes and touch-points. This is done by fostering resonance with audiences through careful study of brand DNA, to incorporate legacy/heritage, the foundation of values, and competitive positioning toward the strategic evolution of brand equity.

Offering:
The Tangible Element

Strategically designed offerings that stimulate the senses, imbed emotional cues, establish a clear design language and surprise the consumer are empowered for successful differentiation. Understanding of the usage environments and product lifecycle compliments consumer insights and brand learning to help formulate consumer-embraced solutions.

Business:
The Overarching Influencer

Identification of business opportunities requires uncovering consumer benefits and considering value propositions, often in novel ways, especially to evolve or disrupt business models. It also can require collaboration on top-line financials to support business plan formulation, competitive landscape assessment, establishing channel partnership criteria, and envisioning distribution growth models. By driving high perceived value and quick market deployment to generate ROI, RKS helps businesses and brands better ensure market success.

"Create your winning design strategy: Setting your stage, mapping your future, personifying your customers." - Predictable Magic

Psycho-Aesthetics®
Driven Design Process

1. DISCOVER

ALIGN > EXPLORE > TRANSLATE

RKS begins by understanding the consumers, the market and channel. By collaborating, aligning, and mining existing research and insights, we can develop the needed first person perspective. We then explore the landscape to generate insights and understandings of people’s needs and aspirations… how they see themselves, their motivations and perceptions, how the competition performs and is perceived.

During the Discovery phase, RKS establishes the team ethic, communication practices, and team alignment, typically through an opportunity session informed by the perspectives of key stakeholders. Background analysis, success criteria, and intent clarification proceeds robust exploration, which involves leveraging internal insights while also framing, planning, and executing necessary research. Teams transform these insights and strategies into immersive visual presentations that include Personas, Usage Scenarios and Pain Points to facilitate deep understanding and alignment.

2. CREATION

IDEATE > REFINE > FINALIZE

Knowledge, insight and wisdom visualized into maps and stories fuel the ‘magic.’ Predictable design ‘magic’ is also generated through rigorous exploration, collaboration, frameworks and debate, which leads to meaningful innovation and design that goes far beyond expected experience. Building on the strategic intent unveiled, we brainstorm offerings within the identified opportunity spaces factoring in user criteria and aspirations. Experiences and offerings are then storyboarded and brand narratives created, or low fidelity prototypes are produced for consumer co-creation.

Refining is characterized by fast fails and rapid iterations, where concepts are further brought to life. Prototypes are developed for physical design and GUI, establishing foundational architecture, while services are blueprinted. Alternatives are then narrowed so that physical interpretations can be validated with users. Final colors, materials and textures are determined and full-sized appearance models built, or digital and physical environments realized and unveiled.

3. EXECUTION

BUILD > SIMULATE > DEPLOY

Putting it all together into a cohesive brand, story, voice and message re-affirms the promise and delivers meaningful experience. This in turn creates barriers for the competition, fuels adoption and ignites other viral effects.

During the phases of execution the RKS team works to build, simulate and quickly deploy meaningful design solutions for products, services and branding campaigns. While building, we assess design specifications and technical feasibility, ensuring a robust foundation for development. Prototype testing for physical design, and beta testing for GUI, are included within the next phase of simulation. This also involves production planning, vendor identification and consultation through pilot production. The ‘Deploy’ phase typically involves the contribution of various launch support activities -- from packaging and web design, to communications campaign support.

Understanding Psycho-Aesthetics®

RKS uses Psycho-Aesthetics® to strategically connect consumers’ needs and aspirations with rich and memorable experiences. The Psycho-Aesthetics® philosophy and methods help organizations to develop successful offerings and services, by identifying opportunity and clarifying design intent as a strategic foundation that informs and aligns project teams and decision makers through a common visual language.

Psycho-Aesthetics® mapping translates peoples’ desires into a comprehensive visual context for management evaluation, while simultaneously providing direction for design and innovation teams throughout the process of a project. It is a simple, yet thoroughly repeatable and scalable methodology, utilized in practice from Fortune 500 companies to start-ups and taught at leading design and business schools. It is used for UX, Brand, Innovation, Venture Creation, Market Analytics and Trajectories.

Solid Foundations

The groundbreaking and foundational psychological theory expressed in Abraham Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs” illustrates how human needs and emotions are valued and fulfilled. His work revealed that as people’s foundational needs are met, their needs evolve, and they strive for self-actualization.

To apply this philosophy in a context relevant and applicable for design, RKS has translated Maslow’s “Hierarchy of Needs” into a framework for Consumer’s Emotional Needs, Desires and Aspirations.

Psycho-Aesthetics® Maps are powerful tools for unearthing market insights built on this universally applicable understanding of emotional needs, combined with assessment of Interactive Engagement. They provide essential qualitative understanding to supplement other quantitative analysis, as well as better comprehension of competitive dynamics and opportunity.

EMOTION and INTERACTIVITY
combine to form
EXPERIENCE.

The Basic Quadrant

Represented by offerings that are simple, purely functional and requires little involvement from the user. Depicted by a paperclip, it is minimally interactive and emotionally engaging.

The Artistic Quadrant

The Artistic Quadrant represents pure beauty. Beholding the Mona Lisa is impressive, meaningful, actualizing and empowering, yet doesn’t provide much function or interaction.

The Versatile Quadrant

Products and services in the Versatile Quadrant offer users high levels of interactivity, but little emotional connection. Complex technology and multi-functional devices dominate this quadrant, symbolized by a loader.

The Enriched Quadrant

The Enriched Quadrant in the upper right corner – represented by the Ferrari – combines interactivity and empowerment, functionality with beauty. Enriched offerings engage multiple senses and are driven by higher-level emotional needs and the desire for self-expression.

Psycho-Aesthetics® Mapping

The vertical axis of the Psycho-Aesthetics® Map is based on the “Consumer Hierarchy,” where the lowest point represents the most essential needs (dependability and safety), and the highest point represents the most dynamic needs (fully-empowered performance). The most meaningful consumer experiences provide this highest level of empowerment. By empowerment, we mean the emotional connections we make with products and services, because they help us to do things we couldn’t do (or couldn’t do as well) without them. The X-axis serves to measure interactivity, from passive to immersive, evaluating how many senses are activated and how deeply engaging the overall interactivity is.

Psycho-Aesthetics® Maps serve as a visual and qualitative framework to understand how individual entities are differentiated in relative terms to each other for the respective segment they are being mapped within. The adoption and transformation of “Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs” into Consumers’ Emotional Needs, Desires and Aspirations allows for personas, offerings and brands to be mapped, revealing gaps and forward-looking opportunities.

“What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself.” - Abraham Maslow

The Power and Value of Psycho-Aesthetics®

Psycho-Aesthetics® maps are visually immersive tools that provide a window into the hearts and minds of ever-evolving markets, and a pathway to establishing powerful and profitable emotional connections. This proven mapping process exposes gaps in the market where consumers' needs aren't being met sufficiently, while unearthing opportunities for product and service solutions.

Psycho-Aesthetics® Maps are flexible and scalable and can be leveraged for insights in virtually any industry or category. They utilize two novel dimensions in a commonly understood X/Y mapping scheme. The maps incorporate consumers’ need states into the vertical Y-axis and levels of interactivity into the horizontal X-axis creating four quadrants. Opportunities for business success can be found in each of the four quadrants, and depend on an evaluation of the industry dynamics and consumer needs.

RKS has applied this methodology to produce thousands of maps across industries, charting levels of self actualization against levels of interactivity. Mapping in this way regularly identifies opportunity zones, reveals consumer need-based market direction, and helps align stakeholders into a shared and collaborative vision leading to dynamic and successful execution. By aligning internal stakeholders around a single design manifest, while facilitating genuine team collaboration, Psycho-Aesthetics helps teams better harness design’s strategic opportunities.

You can learn more about Psycho-Aesthetics® and its application in Predictable Magic, released by Wharton School Publishing in August 2010.

The Hero's Journey

The Hero’s Journey – Universal Truth to Understanding the Consumer Engagement Process

Man’s ancient, tribal, and universal narrative for compelling storytelling is a great way to understanding how people see and interact with the thousands of experiences they encounter on a daily basis. Applying a theoretical journey for each product or service as a consumer experience throughout the lifecycle helps in establishing emotional relevance.

It also facilitates calling out the benefits of a design, motivating behavior change, boosting memory and recall, and reaching beyond the register to activate advocacy.

In our experience economy and this digital age of social media and the internet, 'heroic evangelists' are often the most meaningful catalyst for propelling brand adoption because of their authenticity, speed and global reach.

Compelling Experiences, Engagement, and Advocacy

Consumers themselves increasingly hold the power to fuel the viral demand that creates market leadership; therefore, learning how to create, enrich and empower meaningful consumer experiences has risen to vital importance regardless of the product or service sector. Features alone do not create emotional connection. It’s only when the consumer experience creates real benefits that the bond between people and brand is formed.

The hero's journey is a classic story-telling archetype brought to life by Joseph Campbell that we have also adapted and incorporated into our proven methodology, to frame the process by which consumers emotionally bond with products and experiences they encounter in the marketplace. The hero’s journey is common across global cultures, and mirrors the consumer engagement process. We use it as a framework for understanding consumer engagement, adoption and advocacy because it is flexible enough to examine purchase decisions of varying complexity.

By paralleling this universal truth, we systematically break down product and service offerings into a series of key attractors for consumer groups, each of which can be benchmarked against competitive offerings and mapped. Insight and innovations are blended to create a tailored journey for each of their unique perspectives - facilitating engagement, resonance and reward. The "moment of truth" happens after the purchase, when the consumer interacts with the design. When the design makes them feel empowered, when they feel that magic of emotional connection, they feel compelled to share news of their marketplace victory with others. At every stage it is critical that the offering affirms the qualities and emotions that initially attracted each consumer persona to truly activate adoption and advocacy.

P-A Applications: KOR Water

Brand Creation & Strategic Portfolio Positioning

The entrepreneurs leading KOR Water recognized the need for a healthy, sustainable, environmentally sound way to stay hydrated. RKS’ expertise was sought for the development of a new brand and strategic portfolio positioning with the creation of several offerings at different price tiers over a multi-year timeframe. Psycho-Aesthetics mapping presented a dashboard of the crowded and complex category, providing insight into the competitive factors and dynamics of consumer’s preferences.

Mapping confirmed an opportunity to develop an enriched offering- one that would be more dynamic and immersive compared to the competition. This helped frame the design challenge for a reusable water bottle that was innovative while still promoting health and the environment. The map also led to an exploration of brand connections and associations, personalization and empowerment, as well as education campaigns about hydration and sustainability that encourage water-related advocacy.

P-A Applications: Neuma

Cohesive brand experience across multiple touch-points

Ensuring a brand retains a consistent personality and experience across product, packaging, web, media and online community is critical to create and maintain an emotional connection with consumer segments. Psycho-Aesthetics® mapping has been instrumental at communicating the direction for continuity across multiple experience touch points for a more aligned and engaging brand experience.

Psycho-Aesthetics® mapping helped communicate the need for a consistent brand image and presence across all consumer interactions, which helped our entrepreneurial client Neuma truly make their mark with tattoo artists and collectors. The mapping helped reveal a brand compass and positioning grounded in high-tech design sophistication that underscored Neuma’s power, credibility, confidence and relevance to the genre. It guided efforts to help the brand stay authentic and ensure relevance and resonance with creative audiences in whichever physical or digital medium they encountered it.

The cohesiveness of experiences was delivered through various touch points that embodied the attitude and energy of tattoo culture while complementing and showcasing the device’s cutting-edge technology.

Defining the direction on the Psycho-Aesthetics® map complimented RKS’ process throughout in design, engineering, packaging and brand communications. This helped deliver an aligned and compelling brand around a device that delivered a huge leap forward in safety, comfort and convenience for the tattoo community.

P-A Applications: JBL Professional

Product Line Reinvigoration

Psycho-Aesthetics® mapping has also been applied successfully to provide guidance to product line reinvigoration- as was the case with the EON line of speakers for JBL Professional. This was a classic case of an innovation whose value eroded over time and had to be refreshed among professional musicians. The original EON was far ahead of its competitors, but the gap between offerings had narrowed.

To re-capture segment leadership, RKS first needed to understand where the market was moving and the current position of JBL amid the competition. Then, designers would be able to develop an exciting and engaging design that simultaneously conveyed JBL’s superior quality and light weight technology.

As part of the Psycho-Aesthetics® framework, RKS started by defining the key attractors in the specific category – the main criteria on which the consumers base their decision about a product in the initial physical discovery of the product. The initial perception is often but not solely based on the outside design factors, and creates the initial connection between the brand, product experience, and the user. After assessment of the Key Attractors, this map was generated. The current Eon as well as the competitors were placed based on predefined parameters to communicate market dynamics through an unfamiliar lens that lends clarity to consumer perceptions and attraction. This mapping helped define where the Opportunity Zone for EON’s next generation resided.

P-A Applications: GizmoLive

Emotional & Sensorial Resonance within Interactive Spaces

When shopping at a mall, people are exposed to an overwhelming number of ads and signs that attempt to attract their attention with the latest product, fashion, and technology. Many of these ads are seen but quickly dismissed by consumers without making a lasting impression. GizmoLive wanted a better way to educate and simultaneously entertain consumers on the newest product that would provide an engaging and memorable experience.

Because we make decisions rapidly and the conscious bandwidth of all our senses is much smaller than the actual total stimuli, the study of sensory engagement lends clarity to strategically designing the critical elements behind attraction, engagement, retention and reward.

Psycho-Aesthetics® mapping was employed to understand how display ads at retail settings engage the human senses of sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell. By positioning these on the Psycho-Aesthetics® map, we were able to define the opportunity zone for GizmoLive. The majority of ads in shopping malls are static and simply something for consumers to look at. Some displays require more interaction allowing people to both see and hear them. This mapping revealed an opportunity for a new type of interactive, multi-platform kiosk that delivers an immersive experience by engaging all of the human senses.
